The Concentration camp in Hinzert near Trier was established in October 1939. It was used as a „police detention camp“ for Westwall workers and beginning in July 1940 it served as a „transit camp“. Particularly prisoners from Luxembourg, Belgium, France and the Netherlands were sent from Hinzert to the concentration camps at Buchenwald, Natzweiler or Dachau. The SS abandoned the camp in March 1945 and forced some of the prisoners to march to Buchenwald. In connection with the “evacuation” of the main camp at Hinzert, those “unable to march” were killed. The survivors were liberated by U.S. troops in late March 1945.
Our excursion will take us to the memorial site in Hinzert, to learn more about the horrors people had to live through at this place. We will have a guided tour, lead by experts from the memorial site. We will meet at 12:15 at Trier main station and take the bus to Hinzert. The tour will take about 2.5h and we’re planning to be back in Trier at 18:30. The tour will be in English, partly indoors and free of charge.
